Photo Composition with the Proportion of the Golden Triangle

Golden Takes app using Golden Triangle Photo filter

We wrote this article to show you how to composition your photos using the Golden Triangle Ratio.

Many people consider it one of the hardest compositional rules to apply, however, I am here to show you how the Golden Triangle will help you make amazing photos in a new perspective easily.

The Secret here

The big secret is in the transverse lines formed by aligned triangles. Many people also prefer to use rectangles that end up forming the same formation, which is why the rule is also called the Golden Rectangle, Golden Rectangle Ratio.

Take a look at what we are talking about:

Golden Triangle Lines

Note that the lines intersect at right angles of 90 degrees. And most amazingly, the lines intersect exactly at the Golden Ratio:

Golden Triangle Intersection Exactly in Golden Ratio

On this site here you can understand the complete training.

We now know that the great secret of the Golden Triangle is precisely that the intersections are positioned in the Golden Ratio which is where our eyes are attracted and the photos are most attractive.

How to apply to photos

Knowing that intersections are the points of interest makes it easy, you just need to notice your scene so that the image lines follow the rule lines to the point of interest. Let’s look at a photo that used the rule:

Profile shot that was made based on the Golden Triangle

Let’s see how simple it is to make this photo using the Golden Triangle filter in the Golden Takes App:

Golden Takes app using Golden Triangle Photo filter

Note that the woman’s gaze is close to the intersection of the line, and her jaw follows the angle of the lower line, forming a beautiful image. A really simple photo to make and with a fantastic result.

Remember that you do not need to position your points of interest exactly above the lines or at the intersection points. The important thing is to follow the direction the lines take you. See this image, note that the ship line follows the Triangle Ratio.

For long objects or those offering a perspective line the rule is sensational, it gives a very interesting effect. See this from a bridge:

Can you understand how to use the Composition of Photos Golden Triangle rule? Hope so! However if there was any doubt, ask us ?! 🙂

How to Use Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds Together on Cell Phone Camera

Anyone who likes to take pictures with their cell phone always wonders how it is possible to use the Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds together on the Cell Phone Camera, so we decided to write to help you with this.

The first thing we need to know is that no cell phone nowadays natively brings the possibility of the Camera’s Golden Ratio filter. However, the Rule of Thirds comes with most Android phones, leaving only Iphones (with iOS) out.

To circumvent the situation and have the two filters together we indicate the use of Golden Takes which is the only application that brings the possibility of overlapping the Golden Ratio Spiral and Rule of Thirds. Let’s start by looking at the following photo:

Photo of Lighthouse ready after applying the Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds.

Not beautiful? Imagine you standing in front of this lighthouse thinking, “Now what?” How will I compose this photo? Where do I look and watch?

Well, let’s think about some important points for using both rules. First, we focus the center of the spiral (of the Golden Ratio) near the light of the Lighthouse, and you must agree with me that it is the highlight, right? Then another point that catches the eye is the red roof of the building, so let’s focus there at the intersection of the Rule of Thirds lines. Ready!

With the cell phone in hand you move there, here and do it exactly as we speak. Take a look at what your phone screen would look like:

Lighthouse photo on cell phone with Rule of Thirds as well.

Just saw how simple it was to merge the two rules?

Maybe you think the phone screen is a little bit polluted … and of course you are right, however the result of the photo is spectacular! It sure is worth it.

It’s all about Symmetry

I want to draw your attention to a very important detail, which is the Symmetry! Go back to the image above and note that I still positioned the building wall exactly on the Spiral grid line. This grid is a filter that Golden Takes also have and is called Phi Grid, but in another post I explain better.

All of these details will help you compose photos anywhere quickly and easily, so take a look at a few more examples:

Photo Landscape Sunset after applying Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds
Photo Sunset on Mobile

In this example above we have: Golden Ratio in Sun and lower bar of Rule of Thirds at sea level.

Photo sun setting
Sun Photo Stitches on Golden Ratio Screen

In this other example I focused the sun on the Golden Ratio, then aligned the two lower intersections of the Rule of Thirds in the trees, the left one in the foreground tree and the right one in the background tree.

Hopefully with these examples it has become clear to you how to use the Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds together on the Camera Screen of your Phone!

And you know right? Got doubts comments down here 🙂

How the Golden Ratio Works in Photography

Example of Golden Ratio Photo with People's Faces

In times of social network who never thought of ways to make your photos more beautiful? After all having beautiful photos is everyone’s right. So I will explain to you how the Golden Ratio in Photography works.

The good news is that the rule is simple and easy to make your photos naturally better. You will understand how to quickly use the Golden Ratio, God Number, Golden Rule, Golden Spiral and more.

Let’s present her graphical representation below and then explain why it is a Spiral:

Golden Ratio Spiral
Golden Ratio Spiral

The formula you see in the image is responsible for generating this spiral. The first appearance of this number was probably in ancient Greece, in the construction of the Parthenon, designed by mathematician and architect Phideas, hence the letter it represents is Phi – or φ -, and only later did the number become even more popular when the Italian Leonardo Fibonacci has discovered a sequence of numbers in which the ratio between the pairs in this sequence is very close to the Golden Ratio we are getting to know.

And the pictures?

Now that you know the basics above all, let’s get down to business.. the photos!! See two examples:

Example Photo with Mountain Golden Ratio

Example of Golden Ratio Photo with People's Faces

Seeing these examples you may have already realized that the big secret is in positioning the main point of the photo as close as possible to the center of the spiral. That’s where things get naturally beautiful, is the number of God at work!

And to use the rule you have two options: Either use the grid that your camera or phone has or some mobile application for that. Let’s look at an example with the grid and I’ll explain how we will do it:

Thirds Rule Grid Overlaid with Golden Ratio Spiral
Thirds Rule Grid Overlaid with Golden Ratio Spiral

Did you notice that the grid your digital camera or cellphone has is very close to the center of the Golden Ratio spiral? They are! Here’s the secret, try to imagine this position when composing your photos and you’re done! Your photos will look spectacular.

Now if you like perfection the solution is to use the mobile application, which will generate the spiral in real time and will help you a lot in photo compositions, see a screenshot:

Mobile App Screenshot with Golden Ratio
Mobile App Screenshot with Golden Ratio

Then it’s easy, with the mobile app in hand you move until you find the perfect position. If your main scene is in another quadrant, simply rotate the spiral to fit the correct point. In conclusion, if you want to rock social media, start using this new way of shooting!

Is it clear now how the Golden Ratio in Photography works? If you have any questions, comment below and we will help you!
